Congratulations to Amber Balfour-Cunningham and Charlotte Patrick from the University of Western Australia, who shared the Paul Turner Scholarship based on their work on the Anvil Way Constructed Wetland environment in the third-year unit Environmental Assessment ENVT3361.

A PhD student’s completion after thesis submission and successful examination are cause for both celebration and sadness. A couple of weeks ago we bid farewell to the newly-minted Dr Andy Lucas who, having waited for completion of his thesis examination at UWA was off to Singapore for more exciting scientific adventures. Making do with what’s available

Xu Nian’s PhD project involves sampling sediments and water in areas of high monosulfide accumulation, where sediments are often too soft and deep to wade in safely. DuringĀ  recent sampling exercise in autumn, the water level was very low and we needed to sample in the centre of the drain system to get sufficient water depth. The only problem was, it was too far to reach without wading (see above). Continue reading
