another farewell

the t-shirt

Dr Andy Lucas, the consummate t-shirt wearer, unwrapping the only sensible farewell gift. Note the evidence of coffee and cake, essential for all celebrations, big or small.

A PhD student’s completion after thesis submission and successful examination are cause for both celebration and sadness. A couple of weeks ago we bid farewell to the newly-minted Dr Andy Lucas who, having waited for completion of his thesis examination at UWA was off to Singapore for more exciting scientific adventures.

Andy’s departure brought to an end, for me anyway, of a stunning, brilliant cohort of PhD students. Having developed genuine friendships with “my” students, I miss them all and the enthusiasm and excitement that they brought to my little patch at UWA. Fortunately the next cohort are a great bunch as well, and I’m looking forward to all the great work we’ll do together.

In 2012 we farewelled Dr Bree Morgan, Dr Talitha Santini, and Dr Xin Du. Fortunately not all at once! – the shock would have been excessive!

Bree worked on a couple of short research projects, both here at UWA and at Southern Cross Geoscience. She then won a postdoctoral position offered jointly by CSIRO and Monash University, and moved to Melbourne.
Talitha from her University of Queensland page.
Talitha was actually the first to leave, taking up a postdoctoral position at McGill University in Canada, then returning to Australia to take up an academic position in Environmental Management at the University of Queensland.
Xin (“Lucy”) at the Australian Synchrotron.
Xin also worked on a short research project at UWA, and did some consulting work in Hubei, China, before taking a position as a consultant for Pendragon Environmental in Perth, Western Australia.
